Peace force faces Maoist fury
RUDRA BISWAS

Ranchi, July 6: In a severe blow to the anti-extremist campaign in the rebel-infested Gumla district, three members belonging to the Shanti Sena were beheaded by the outlawed CPI(Maoist) activists last evening.

Police sources said the incident took place at Khairpani village, located in the hilly areas amid dense forest tracts, some 10 km away from Palkot police station in Gumla district.

The extremists, apparently angered by the formation of the Shanti Senas in the villages of Gumla district that had full support from the state police and district administration, later beat up the family members of the three beheaded activists, seized all their household goods and blew up their houses.

More than a hundred armed extremists surrounded Khairpani village yesterday. To preven the villagers from coming together, they bolted every house in the hamlet from outside and began an intensive search operation to locate the three Sena leaders, Mahesh Singh, Mangal Singh and Khirodhar Singh.

Mahesh was the first to be dragged out of his house. However, he managed to set himself free and in turn attacked one of the extremists with a sharp-edged weapon. He was soon overpowered, thrashed severely and then beheaded in full view of his wailing family members.

Two other Shanti Sena activists, Mangal and Khirodhar, too, met the same fate.

Irate extremists later pumped in dozens of bullets on the three dead bodies.

Household goods of the three Sena activists were also seized by the extremists who used dynamite sticks to blow up the houses of the three.

The extremists also decamped with three licensed firearms belonging to the deceased.

Intensive combing operations have been started by the police personnel and para- military forces in the dense forest tracts of Palkot subdivision.

Gumla superintendent of police M.L. Meena is currently away on leave and assistant superintendent of police Saket Kumar Singh is in charge of the operation.

Efforts to contact Singh, however, failed as he was reported to be leading the force in the remote Palkot areas.

A police spokesman, Ravindra Kumar, inspector at Gumla police station, while confirming the incident said contingents of police and paramilitary forces have been rushed to Palkot to lead combing operations.

The state police, as part of its campaign to involve local people to combat the growing menace posed by the banned Maoist Communist Centre and Peoples War groups, had set up Gram Raksha Dals and Shanti Senas at the village levels throughout Gumla for the past two years.

These people resistance forces were given liberal arms licenses to provide support to the people.

Plans were also afoot to arm these groups with mobile phones and other communication devices.

The police sources confirmed that the formation of the peoples’ resistance groups had heavily paid off as more than a dozen extremists were killed in the district, leading to a near wipe off of extremist activities in the district.

However, the latest incident and the gruesome murder of three anti-extremist campaigners have spread terror in the district.

Local villagers revealed that more than two years after the resistance groups were formed for the villagers’ safety, the three Sena activists were killed yesterday.
